I absolutely love my modified Rode NT1A.
I’m an eclectic mix of things. These days when I am not teaching music to middle school kids, I do a lot of voice over work, but I’m a trained composer with a music technology focus and a trained opera singer as well. In my previous life, I scored for TV, internet, theater, etc. I even worked for Cakewalk Music Software not far from you for several years.
I bought this mic because I needed a backup up for my Blue Kiwi which is what I use most for recording voice over. I didn’t need it to sound like the Kiwi nor did I expect it to. I just needed something that could play at that level in the budget mic price range. I was actually favoring a stock Rode (model TBD) as I am a big fan of the company.
I’ve tried this on voice over, and for fun, I recorded some ukulele and some a cappella vocal jazz harmonies in 4 part. This mic may well replace my Kiwi as my go-to. I love the Kiwi, but I think I like the sound of my voice through your mic better! It is quite a lot quieter than the Kiwi is.
One reason I was drawn to this mic was for the description as a less sibilant mic, one of my biggest challenges. (Sibilance appropriate for the opera stage is just a little too much when recording intimate voice over!) It really delivers.
I have never used a vintage Neumann… only modern ones, so I don’t have much basis for comparison there. It was not important to me that it sounded just like one, though all the samples online were certainly very close. I just needed another mic to work at a very high professional level, and this one certainly does.
I am thrilled with my purchase. Thank you very much. Please share with your team.
Best,
